When the Client Says “Chandelier,” But the Room Whispers “Skylight”

In the world of interior design, there’s a sweet spot, the place where client dreams meet designer expertise. At No5, we live for that moment. However, sometimes, the path to it isn’t straightforward.
One of the most challenging and interesting parts of our job is navigating the space between what a client thinks they want and what we, as designers, know will actually work aesthetically, functionally, and emotionally.
The Creative Tug-of-War
Every project starts with a vision. The client brings their needs, tastes, Pinterest boards, and sometimes, specific ideas. And that’s wonderful; collaboration is key. But design is more than arranging beautiful things in a space.
It’s about flow, proportion, balance, light, longevity, and a story that ties everything together.
Sometimes, our professional instincts tell us that a certain material won’t age well, a color will shrink the space, or the layout will disrupt the natural flow. But the client is emotionally attached to it.
So what do we do?
We listen. Then we educate. Then we co-create.
Our Philosophy at No5
We believe the best designs are born out of mutual trust. That’s why our process is built on transparency, explanation, and intention. If we advise against something, we explain the why not just in design terms but in ways that matter to the client’s lifestyle, maintenance expectations, and long-term enjoyment.
Sometimes that means pushing back gently. Sometimes it means meeting halfway, and occasionally, it means letting go of our own preferences in favor of the client’s vision as long as it still holds integrity.
Because at the end of the day, it’s their space, their story. We’re just the translators.
Turning Mismatches Into Magic
One of our recent projects started with a major mismatch. The client envisioned a glamorous, mirrored, high-shine aesthetic in a home that was bathed in warm, natural textures. Our gut said it would clash. But instead of saying “no,” we said, “How about this?”
We introduced polished accents in a way that caught the light without overwhelming it, blending the client’s vision with the home’s natural rhythm. The result? A space that felt luxurious yet grounded and, most importantly, deeply personal.
The Takeaway
Design is not about compromise. It’s about elevation. Taking a set of needs, desires, and even contradictions and turning them into something cohesive, functional, and beautiful.
So when the client’s requirements don’t immediately align with our design vision, we don’t see a problem. We see an opportunity. To educate, to inspire, and to create something neither of us could’ve imagined alone.
If you’re dreaming up a space but unsure how to bring it all together or feeling stuck between your Pinterest board and the real world, let’s talk.
